Oregon’s Top Linebacker for 2013? Mitch Lomax

Mitch Lomax (6-4 235 LB Jr.) comes in ranked (NEI) the top junior linebacker in the state and he looks to be just getting better. He has become a game changing type linebacker that has helped LO get off to a (8-0) start and a #2 overall state ranking. As most know he is also the son of legendary NFL QB Neil Lomax, and it has become very apparent that he has learned from one of the best.

Lomax has grown up in a house full of quarterbacks so he definitely sticks out like a sore thumb. The baby of the family has learned from an NFL legend and 2 record breaking brothers who have moved on to play D1 football. “My dad has been my biggest supporter, and we are able to watch a lot of film together and work on my reads.” Lomax has all of the intangibles that make up a special football player. His speed and size alone are rare for a kid with so much athleticism, and if you want further clarification you can just ask head coach Steve Coury who says, ” Mitch is the real deal , he’s big fast and has a unique feeling for how to play the game”. This coming from one of the all time great high school coaches who has sent handfuls of kids on to the D1 level.

Mitch is your ultimate team guy, as he is pairing with two of the better backers in the state in Zach Walen (6-3 195 Sr) and Grant Taylor (6-2 215 Sr). Together they form what could be the top trio of backers in Oregon. The Lake O D line has been huge thus far, but the backers provide the foundation needed to win big ball games. Taylor went down with a scary injury and is out indefinitely so it will be interesting to see how some of the other backers respond.

“I want to win a state championship for the seniors on this team, not for myself, the older group is special and I really want to win for them.” Lomax will be a legit D1 backer as he continues to grow. He has gone from splitting time at Tight End to focusing just on his linebacker position. ” I am able to give our offense some good looks at practice going against our #1 group, so its good for both of us”.

The Lakers were all over West Linn last Friday as Lomax helped pitch a shutout against the Lions and also block a punt. He will be on the radar of different big time schools who love kids that have grown up in a football family. You can’t teach what has been instilled since day one so the sky is the limit. We wish Mitch the best moving forward and will continue to follow his progress, he is a class kid with a bright future.
