Rising Prospect- Decatur DB Kevin Young story

(Kevin Young 5-10 165 Jr. DB) Decatur HS

Federal Way’s Decatur High School isn’t known for producing top-end talent, but more and more you are seeing prospects who are garnering attention, and one that showed well at the Barton Combine in Vancouver last weekend was none other an Kevin Young, a 5’10", 165-pound defensive back. Northwest Elite Index spoke with the emerging prospect shortly after finishing the four-hour event and he updated us on things…

"I played wide receiver for six years, but when I was going into my junior year my coach wanted me to move to DB, so that’s what I did and I am really happy about it," Young told NEI. "I love the physicality of it and I love to hit people. That’s probably the most fun — the hitting. I feel like I made a pretty good transition to it last year, and I think this year I’ll be even better because I have had all offseason to work on things."

As a junior last fall, Young totaled over 20 tackles while posting 19 passes defensed and four interceptions.

When he stepped on the field last weekend, Young showed athleticism and the ability to find the ball in the air. As the day went along, he also showed outstanding coachability, something that is pretty underrated when it comes to prospects. He matched up well as the day went along against some of the top wideouts at the camp, including Vancouver Skyview’s Forrest Russell and Reiley Henderson as well as Wilsonville (Oregon’s) Tanner Shipley.

"The competition out here is just great and it really keeps you focused, because if you lose that you will look silly," Young said. "I felt sorta out of my element early, just trying to get my feet under me, but I think as things went along, I got better. I definitely got more confident."

Young plans to attend the Northwest Elite Camp at Mercer Island on Friday and also wants to hit the Barton Elite Camp at the University of Washington on June 30th as well as the Nike SPARQ combine in Oregon over the weekend.

As far as recruiting is concerned, Young hasn’t received an offer, but said he’s heard from Michigan, UNLV, BYU, Washington State and Eastern Washington.

"I’m open to anyone that wants to recruit me," Young said. "I’m looking at some different team camps to go to so I’ll just have to work that out, but I’m interested in anyone that is interested in me."

We will continue to keep track of Young’s progress over the coming weeks and we will update news as it happens with him.
