Rising Star: Bellevue DE Nick Santa

(Nick Santa 6-3 240 Jr. OL/DL Bellevue)

Northwest Elite Index caught up with Bellevue DE Nick Santa and the talented two-way star filled us in on where things stand…

“Things have been going well for me this year so far,” Santa said recently. “I’ve been hitting the weights and running, working on my pad-level. Basically all of the stuff you need to work on every year. I just want to get better every year.”
As a two-way star for the Wolverines, who won the 3A State Title this past season, Santa’s main focus was defense where he totaled 25 tackles, six sacks and double-digit QB knockdowns.

“My main position has always been defense,” Santa noted. “I played a lot as a sophomore, but I didn’t start. Then this past year, I started on defense and they plugged me in on offense and said ‘you’re going to learn this’ so I was like ‘alright’ and I started at guard.

“We had a weak guard and strong guard. I was weak guard for the start of the season and I pulled a lot, but then I got moved to strong guard and that’s where I finished things off this year.

“Most schools want me on defense, especially at defensive end because they aren’t sure I can put on the size I need to.”

At 6’3″, 230 pounds, Santa has the perfect size for a defensive end and is getting attention from schools up and down the West Coast including the two in-state schools.

“I’ve been hearing from Washington and Washington State,” Santa said. “I was hoping to go over to Washington State’s Junior Day, but we didn’t get the invite until too late. The letters got to our school, but we have new classrooms, so the mail didn’t get to coach (Butch) Goncharoff in time.

“We will probably go over and see it this spring. I’m sure that will happen.”

In addition to the two in-state schools, Santa said he’s also hearing quite a bit from Oregon State, Idaho and Montana.

Santa said he hopes to get out to some Barton camps in the coming weeks and that he hasn’t mapped out which schools he will visit this spring, but plans to participate in as many camps as possible.

We will continue to stay in touch with Santa in the coming weeks and months and will update news as it happens.
