An athlete that has completely come out of nowhere over the past couple months to impress scouts and coaches alike is Rainier Beach (Seattle) QB Robert Calloway. As a two-year starter at Franklin, Calloway earned First Team All-Metro honors as a sophomore and put up solid numbers for the Quakers, but he hopes the move to Rainier Beach will make for a much better situation for him.
“I wasn’t happy there and we moved anyway so I’m at Rainier Beach now,” Calloway told Northwest Elite Index recently. “At Beach, we have a lot of really solid players here and the coaches are proven as good role models for their players on and off the field. They develop guys and get them ready for the next level.”
Calloway, whose cousin is Seattle Prep DB Tere’ Calloway, has outstanding athleticism and a good Football I.Q., but at just 6’1″, 175 pounds, he knows he’s got some things to work on this offseason in order to show coaches that he can get the job done at the next level and stay healthy while doing it.
“I most definitely see myself as a quarterback at the next level,” Calloway noted. ” My goal this year is to get faster and I just got with a speed trainer recently, so I’m hoping that helps out my speed and my explosiveness.
“I’m also going to (a local gym) six or seven days a week right now. I need to get stronger and put on some pounds and that’s something I’m really focused on. I think getting bigger and stronger and faster will help me overall this year, and it will show coaches I can get it done.”
Recruiting has yet to really take off for the multi-talented prospect, but Calloway did mention several schools have begun to show him some interest.
“So far, the schools I’ve talked to are Eastern Washington and UNLV,” Calloway said. “The ones sendng me stuff and that have stopped by to see me are UCLA, Georgia Tech and Washington State. Yale also sent me something and that was just shocking. I mean, I do have a 3.4 GPA, but still that one came out of nowhere.”
Calloway took in a Barton Camp earlier this month and looked outstanding, showing a smooth delivery, better footwork than expected and the athleticism necessary to be accurate while throwing on the run. In addition to possibly hitting up another Barton event, Calloway said he plans to take in at least a day or two of UCLA’s camp as well as Washington State’s camp.
“I’m also thinking about going out to Yale’s camp, and possibly going to UNLV” Calloway said. “I have to make sure my funds are good and also just see about the dates and the time I’d need to be gone.”
We will continue to check in on Calloway as he progresses through the recruiting process, and we will update news on him as it happens.
