One of WA’s Best: Bellarmine Prep WR/S Calvin Chandler

A player from the state of Washington who is already seeing a lot of interest from Pac 12 and other BCS schools is Bellarmine Prep (Tacoma) S/WR Calvin Chandler, and because of his outstanding coaching as well as his bloodlines, he’s got the chance to be a big-time recruit before it’s all said and done.

“My dad (Jeff) was a Husky football player and he’s been a mentor for me and a big reason why I’ve had all of the success I’ve had,” Chandler told NEI recently. “He motivates me to do well and he taught me everything I know.”

Chandler parlayed his outstanding size (6’2″, 205), speed (4.52) and football instincts into posting a team-leading 131 tackles and three sacks from his linebacker spot while also hauling in 43 receptions for 704 yards and six touchdowns from his wide receiver spot.

“I feel I did pretty well this year,” Chandler said. “I went in well-prepared by our coaches and overall it was a great experience for me and the rest of the guys on our team.

“I think I could play on either side of the ball (in college), but I feel like my biggest impact would be on defense.”

Schools that have continued to show interest in Chandler range from the Pac 12 — Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Oregon, Utah and Stanford — as well as schools from the Ivy League — Princeton, Harvard, Yale and Penn — and the Mountain West — Boise State — and he said while he grew up a fan of the Huskies, he’s not limiting his options, at least at this point.

“I’m open to everyone,” Chandler said. “Just because my dad played there doesn’t mean that (Washington) would be the best place for me. I love the coaches there, they are great, but if I limit my options right now, I’m not really giving myself the full opportunity to see what else is out there.

“I’ll take some trips this summer and go to some camps and then I will see where I’m at. I don’t even have an offer yet, so I can’t really limit things at this point anyway.”

Chandler is the perfect blend of skill and instincts and he is going to be a player that schools come after hard in the coming weeks and months. We hope to see him live at one of our Barton Elite events in the coming weeks where we can get a great look at what he brings to the table.
