Recruiting is picking up for AJ Ruffin of Tacoma (Wash.) Wilson High School, so we felt it was a good time to get an update on his recruitment.

Ruffin finished off a tremendous senior season as one of the more decorated athletes in the state. He was voted first team All-State at DE by the Associated Press, Narrow 3A League Player of the Year, First Team All-Area DE, All-City TE and All-City DE.

The 6-foot-5, 250 pound two-way standout, who recently picked up an offer from the University of Texas at El Paso.

“I talked to UTEP last spring then never heard from them again,” Ruffin told Northwest Elite Index. “They were going through coaching changes I guess but they came back into contact a couple weeks ago and offered me right on the spot.

“They want me to play Tight End but they said I could play both if I wanted to. I’ve heard that from a good amount of colleges. I have a potential visit set up.”

This is offer number five to go with full rides from Wyoming, New Mexico, Idaho and Portland State.

Ruffin took the first of his official visits to Laramie and the University of Wyoming over the weekend of December 5th and 6th.

“It was my first official visit so I didn’t really have anything to base it off of,” Ruffin said. “it was one of the most fun things I’ve ever done. We went snowmobiling, took tours, ate great food and met great people. I love the coaches the most. They are great people that really care about your well being.”

The following weekend Ruffin took his second visit, this time to Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico.

“I really liked the campus it was a great place filled with great people,” Ruffin noted. “The players were really nice and I felt like they would welcome me in if I were to make that commitment.”

Ruffin is in no hurry to make a final decision and is still in the process of sorting out future visits. He is also hearing from Nebraska, Washington, Washington State, Arizona and Missouri.

“I plan on making my decision mid-late January after all my visits,” Ruffin said. “I really just want to enjoy this experience and learn from it the best I can.”

We will keep you updated on Ruffin and have any news when it breaks.
