2018 Garfield (Seattle, Wa.) WR Mekhi Metcalf from great bloodlines, but he’s prepared to forge his own path while helping the Bulldogs attain football relevance once again.

Metcalf’s father is former NFL receiver Eric Metcalf and his grandfather Terry was a Seattle prep gridiron legend before going on to an NFL career of his own.

“My family is great. It’s where I come from and I love it that my dad and grandfather were both great examples for me growing up,” Metcalf told Northwest Elite Index. “The funny thing is, they wouldn’t let me play football until I was a freshman in high school, so I have only played two years of football. Up until then, all I’d ever played was basketball.”

As a sophomore last season, Metcalf hauled in eight receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns, but he’s expecting an even bigger junior season this coming fall.

“Last year, we struggled at the quarterback position, but I think we’ll be better off this season,” Metcalf said. “I’m also getting better with what I do and how I prepare for things.

“I’m good at tracking down the deep ball and also I have a pretty good release and I can get off the line pretty well and go up and get the ball in jump ball situations.”

As far as recruiting is concerned, Metcalf hasn’t drawn much attention yet, but he’s hoping that some good performances at camps this summer will start getting schools to look his way.

“I’ll definitely be going to the Texas camp just because that’s where my dad went,” Metcalf said. “I’m also going to go to the Nike Opening Regional (in Seattle) and I’m looking at the Northwest Elite Camp (in early June) as well.

“I am also planning to go down to Stanford for a visit and we’ll see what else comes up, but right now, that’s what I have planned.”

With his long and lean frame (6’3″, 165), improving hands and outstanding athleticism to go along with his impressive bloodlines, Metcalf is definitely a player to watch over the next 18 months as the recruiting cycle is just beginning for him.

NEI will have more on Metcalf in the coming months and we will update news on him as it happens.
